On June 26, 2003 a legend was born in Miami. That day the Miami Heat took a chance on a 21 year old kid out of Marquette University named Dwyane Wade.
From that point on basketball in Miami changed in the best way possible. Dwyane Wade help the Miami Heat become one of the most recognizable organizations in the NBA.
The Miami Heat went from a bottom five team in the NBA to a very respectable team in the NBA in a short amount of time. The Heat started winning games in his first year, the Heat won 17 more games and made it to the Semis in the playoffs.
In his 3rd year Wade with the help of Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal led the Miami Heat to their first ever franchise title. Wade arguable had the greatest NBA Finals ever, he averaged 34 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assist a game. He was unstoppable at that point.
Then years passed where the Heat would get far in the playoffs but were not able to get back to Finals. But in 2009 we saw the greatest version of Wade.
In 2009 Wade should have won the MVP and everyone knew it at that time expect the NBA voters. He average 30 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assist and 2 steals a game.
The voters made Stephen Curry was named the first unanimous MVP in 2016, Curry averaged 30 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals. Don’t get wrong LeBron James is a great player and he was deserving of the MVP but the 2009 MVP should have gone to Wade.
Now we are at the start of one of the biggest dynasties of all time the “BIG 3 Era.” From 2011 to 2014 we saw Wade struggle with injuries but he was still dominant when it mattered most which was in the NBA Finals.
That is when Wade leadership was displayed for the whole world to see. He made sure his team was not out of it in every game. The biggest thing he did as a leader was taking a back seat for LeBron James.
He put winning before himself, the only time he took over is when he knew the team needed him, look at the 2011 to 2014 Finals Wade showed up in the biggest moments. The Big 3 accomplished so much during their time together.
They set records that a lot of us thought that would have never been broken. Like the winning streak they had in 2013. It was definitely one the best stretches we have ever seen.
Then Wade went through “Prove the Wrong” period once LeBron James left Miami to go back to Cleveland. During those two years in Miami, Wade showed the world he was not done.
Wade almost led the Heat to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016 without a healthy Chris Bosh. Wade had a great playoff run that year especially in the 4th quarter in all the games he played in.
Then it happened on a summer day in 2016 Wade announced he was going to sign with his home town team the Chicago Bulls. That was hands down one of the saddest day in Miami.
I can say for myself it was just sad to see him go to another team. The Heat did not play as well once Wade left. Wade went on to have a good season with Bulls but it did not last long.
He only played one season with the Bulls. Then he was release by the Bulls the next offseason. Then Wade made a big at the time move by deciding to join LeBron James in Cleveland.
Also that stretch did not last long either he came off the bench and gave the Cavaliers solid minutes every night but at that time the Cavs need to change the roster because the team did not look right.
Then on February 8th, 2018 the Cavaliers traded Wade back to the Miami Heat for a second round pick.
I can say once the move was announced it brought so much joy to Miami because it felt right to have “Wade come home.” The emotions on how Miami felt were describe in his first back with the Heat. The crowd erupted showing Wade so much love.
All the love was shown because he has done so much for the city of Miami. He helped so many communities that Miami changed Miami-Dade County to “Wade County.” Its a saying that did not really happened.
No one can describe all the things he did for the community and plus he helped Miami become a winning culture.
Which made this past season so memorable. This past season was his last season where every basketball city showed Wade love. The all gave him gifts because he played the game the right way with such class. We even saw how much the players respected him by asking to swap jersey with Wade.
This leads us to his home game of his career it was emotional, spectacular and more. Wade played amazing by scoring 30 points and took over the game in the 4th quarter, we saw vintage Wade helping the Heat get a win.
Unfortunately the Heat were not able to win his last game but Wade did get a Triple Double with the help of his longtime teammate/brother Udonis Haslem. Everyone in the NBA world watch that game.
Last Wade said goodbye to the NBA. That moment ranks high on the saddest days for Miami. Miami saw their version of Jordan retire, it was great to see him go out with a triple double but it was sad because we can never see him play again.
Thank You Dwyane Wade.
